Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP)

The UDRP is a global policy created by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) that provides a standardized legal process for resolving disputes over domain name ownership, particularly cases involving trademark infringement or cybersquatting. It allows trademark holders to challenge domain registrations that they believe were made in bad faith and seek transfer or cancellation of the domain without going to court.

A company like “BrandX” discovers that someone has registered brandx-shop.com to impersonate their business.

Through the UDRP process, BrandX can file a complaint with an approved dispute resolution provider to argue that the domain was registered in bad faith and request that it be transferred to them.
